FEED MY LAMBS is an ongoing mission outreach of Church of Our
Saviour and St. Patrick’s Episcopal Church, in Fruit Cove. This ministry
delivers food each month directly to the homes of needy families in an
impoverished area of West St. Augustine.
Each month, church members purchase 10-12 designated food items,
double bag them, and bring them to the church before delivery date which
is normally the fourth Saturday. In addition to one or more food bags,
each family receives a gallon of milk, a loaf of bread, a package of hot dogs
or bologna. These items are purchased from cash donations to the FML
designated account.
On delivery day, 10-12 volunteers load all of the food in 5-8 vehicles
and spend a large part of the day in a “neighbor to neighbor” outreach of
sharing food, expressing compassion and concern, giving hugs and small
treats to the children. Presently, our deliveries touch the lives of 45-50
family units and approximately 150 children. Many of these families
are on a limited monthly income and often find their cupboards empty
toward the end of the month. Others are struggling to find employment.
Others are homeless and are living temporarily in Homeless Coilition
Housing.
Another large part of this ministry is encouraging education for the
children. A back-to-school drive in late summer gives church members
an opportunity to fill a book bag with necessary school supplies a child
needs for starting a new school year.
Feed My Lambs also accepts donations of slightly-used clothing,
shoes, linens, children’s toys, books, games, stuffed animals. These items
should be marked “For Feed My Lambs” and brought to the church office.
Most importantly, additional food bags are needed on a regular basis.
To sign-up to contribute a bag or to get additional information, call
Barbara Byers, 886-0170, or the church office. Donations may be made
anytime by writing a check to Church of Our Saviour and marking it
For Feed My Lambs.
